Transfigureer!
Niets lijkt meer zeker. De regels van vandaag kunnen morgen al niet meer gelden. Hoe is dit mogelijk? Hoe ga je ermee om? ‘Waarheidsgetrouwe’ beelden bieden geen hulp. Want in wat jij als bewijs ziet van jouw mening zal iemand anders zijn eigen overtuiging bevestigd zien. Hoe vermijd je zulke tunnelvisies? Hoe zorg je ervoor dat je jezelf niet blind staart op één interpretatie? Oftewel, hoe leer je een tegengesteld standpunt begrijpen?
De voorwaarden voor het gesprek moeten opnieuw ontdekt worden. Dit kan alleen door middel van de abstracte kunst. Pas als de afbeelding onduidelijk is wordt diens meerduidigheid zichtbaar. De abstractie daagt je als kijker uit om bewust te worden van je eigen activiteit zodat je kunt leren zien.
Optische illusies zijn hier het meest geschikt voor en dan nog in het bijzonder die van de meetkundige soort. Dat de meest simpele vormen je al aan het twijfelen kunnen brengen bevestigd dat onzekerheid een beginsel is van de waarneming. En of je de beelden nou van links naar rechts, van onder naar boven of volledig andersom bekijkt, de ene visie is net zo goed mogelijk als de andere. Maar het al die mogelijkheden kun je nooit gelijktijdig zien. Het daadwerkelijke beeld houdt zich verborgen. De waarheid kun je alleen kennen door je binnen de perken van je bewustzijn bewust te worden van je eigen begrensdheid.

Nothings seems certain. By tomorrow today’s rules might not apply anymore. How is this possible? How do you deal with it? ‘Realistic’ images do not suffice. Because the proof of your opinion might be seen by someone else as evidence backing his beliefs. How do you stay clear of this kind of tunnel vision? How to not cling to one interpretation? In other words, how do you learn to understand somebody else’s point of view?
The presuppositions for dialogue must me discovered anew. This is only possible by means of abstract art. Only when the image is diffuse does it’s indeterminateness become visible. Abstraction challenges you as a viewer to become aware of your own activity so that you can learn to see.
Optical illusions are the most effective means to achieve this end, especially the geometric ones. Even the most basic forms producing doubt is the best demonstration of the uncertainty of perception. You can view the images from left to right, top to bottom or vice versa. One interpretation is potentially as valid as the other. Yet it is impossible to take multiple points of view at the same time. The object represented remains hidden. You can only know the truth by becoming conscious of your own limitations within the limits of your own consciousness.

Ken Je Mij? Gezichten van Utrecht is een verzameling portretten van bekende gezichten uit Utrecht. Het zijn de mensen die we zien gitaarspelen in onze straten, die Straatnieuws verkopen of om losgeld vragen. Zij zijn enkele van de bekendste gezichten van onze stad, maar de meesten van ons weten maar weinig van de mens achter deze gezichten. Om elk portret te kunnen maken, heb ik deze mensen stuk voor stuk ontmoet, ze geïnterviewd en gefotografeerd met hun toestemming.
Ik hoop dat het onderwerp van deze schilderijen en het proces van geschilderd worden ze het gevoel geeft dat ze gezien worden. Ik wens dat deze expositie dat zo typisch Hollandse woord gezelligheid zal genereren in onze Utrechtse gemeenschap. Tot slot hoop ik dat deze schilderijen jou helpen jezelf en de mensen om je heen te bekijken met zachtaardigheid en empathie.
Do You Know Me? Faces of Utrecht is a portrait collection of familiar faces in our community. These are people who we see playing music in the street, selling the straatnieuws, or asking for coins. These are some of the most well known faces in our city, yet most of us know little at all about the people behind them. For each portrait, I met the person, interviewed and photographed them with their permission.
I hope that for the subjects of these paintings, that the process of being painted makes them feel seen. I hope that this exhibit will generate gezeliheid in our Utrecht community. Lastly, I hope that this artwork helps you see yourself and those around you with gentleness and empathy.
Profits from this art collection will be shared equitably with the subjects of the portraits. This means that I will pool all the money, and distribute it in a way that responds to each person’s needs. For example, for Allen, I will help pay for new dentures so he can eat. For Joseph, I will buy appliances for the room he recently moved into so he can be comfortable and prepare food. For others, plain old cash is the most useful. For each person, I will do my best to be responsive to their specific needs.
